Earth Overshoot Day: From this day on we’re using an unsustainable amount of the Earth’s resources

Today marks Earth Overshoot Day – the day by which the human race will have used more of Earth’s natural resources than the planet can renew in the whole year.

Put simply, we use more ecological resources and services than nature can regenerate and this puts the Earth on an unsustainable trajectory.

Through overfishing, overharvesting forests, and emitting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than forests can sequester, humans are demanding more from the earth than it can produce.

HP reveals new sustainability goals

It´s time to get on board with the circular economy, PC giant says.

HP has unveiled plans to revolutionise the way it works to provide a range of environmentally friendly business practices.

The PC giant has pledged to cut the amount of greenhouse gases and waste material generated in making its products within the next ten years as it looks to promote sustainability within what it calls the “circular economy”.

“Sustainability is a guiding principle for HP,” Judy Glazer, the company’s head of sustainability and product compliance said at the company’s HP Sustainability Summit 2017 event in London today, “there’s a real benefit for our customers and society at large.”

Coca-Cola U-turn could help UK catch up on can and bottle recycling

More firms are expected to announce bottle deposit return services after Coca-Cola unexpectedly came out in favour of the idea.

Pepsi, Nestlé, Unilever and M&S have already committed to producing more eco-friendly bottles by using plant-based materials or less plastic, and an uptick in that trend could now be on the cards.

Setting new sustainability standards for cruise ports

While the rising popularity of cruise holidays is a huge benefit to the industry, the associated environmental impact presents a significant shortcoming. With this in mind, ports are going to great lengths to help cruise ships in their sustainability endeavours

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that an average cruise ship with 3,000 passengers and crew produces about 21,000 gallons of sewage a day – that’s more than a billion gallons a year for the industry. Meanwhile, according to the EPA, each day an average cruise ship is at sea it emits more sulphur dioxide than 13 million cars.

Rio Olympics cut flowers from medal ceremonies for sustainability

Olympic medalists traditionally cradle flower bouquets as they hold up gold, silver or bronze medals from a tiered platform. But not this year in Brazil.

Instead, the world’s best gymnasts, runners, ping-pongers and trampolinists are clutching small 3-D sculptures of Rio’s Olympics logo.

The switch from ephemeral flowers to long-lasting trinkets is a small part of the Olympic organizing committee’s bigger mission to limit the environmental damage from the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, a Rio 2016 spokesperson told Mashable.

EU referendum: How will sustainability professionals be voting?

As Britain’s European Union (EU) referendum draws ever nearer, edie has collated the figures of a range of in/out surveys, with a clean sweep of poll results indicating that the majority of sustainability professionals are in favour of voting to remain in the EU.

We start by taking a look at our very own readers’ poll, first referred to within our ‘how the green economy will vote’ article (1 March) and now with more than 500 votes.

The vast majority of respondents to that snapshot survey have revealed that they will be voting to keep Britain in the EU, with almost three-quarters voting in support of Britain’s position as a Member State.

Global leaders increasingly seeing the value of sustainability

Ethical Corporation’s newly published State of Responsible Business Report found that nearly 71% of corporate CEOs are convinced of the value of sustainability – an increase of 2% on 2015 report. 7% said no their CEO isn’t convinced and a further 22% said they weren’t sure.

It would appear that more CEOs are realising the value in committing to becoming a sustainable business. One would hope this continues as the more companies that have top-level commitment, the more gains will be made in delivering positive impacts on society.

Cutting food and carbon waste-lines for healthy climate

Reducing food waste and changing the way people consume calories will help deliver a sustainable food system and reduce emissions, a study suggests.

The global demand for food could more than double by the middle of the century, yet an estimated one third of produce is lost or wasted each year.

By cutting this waste will help food security and reducing agriculture’s climate burden, the researchers added.

Consumers these days want to know that when a business says that it is producing something ethically and sustainably, that it can back up such claims throughout its entire supply chain. After all, a business’s claims to operating sustainably are only partly fulfilled when it can’t confirm the sustainability of its raw materials or other products involved in production. So customers increasingly expect businesses to make sure their supply chain is as committed as they are to principled behaviour.
